Pembrokeshire is the county that lies in the extreme south-west of Wales. It is a beautiful land of wild coastal cliffs and sandy coves that is a favorite of vacationers. As a boy growing up in post-war Britain, when we had one week's holiday a year, or ten days if we were lucky, my family spent several holidays there and I have loved the area ever since. Roaming there for a couple of days in the early summer of 2010, I ran across this charming cottage with its stand of poppies growing atop a garden wall. It was a very wet day with the wind blowing veils of rain across the river estuaries that join at the port of Milford Haven but there were breaks. In one such break I drove past this cottage and immediately saw a painting. I backed up and took some photographs one of which I used as a reference for this piece. The cottage is actually
called Flygate Cottage and the occupants have a print of this painting so I'm sure they don't object to my artist's license in calling it Poppy Cottage.
