Nowadays, Winchcombe is a small Cotswold village but in Saxon times (circa 800 AD) it was the royal capital of Mercia, a huge kingdom. A Saxon mint was unearthed under the floor of one of the cottages on the main street. Now a center for touring the Cotswolds, the village also gained fame from the proximity of Sudeley Castle about a mile down this road.
