I particularly like this watercolor as, to me, it has a sense of mystery. It is based on a photograph I took in the hill town of Volterra in Tuscany, Italy, which is well known for its alabaster work. Magnificent doors like this abound in Tuscany. The particular difficulties in this watercolor were to obtain the right degree of shadowing at the top of the door and in the upper part of the painting while achieving the hard and soft edges at the bottom of the shadow, where the reflected light from the floor illuminates the wall. These were achieved in a single wash but required four glazed repetitions.
